Hunting For Gold.
Brecon Beacons - Wales
As we walk in to the vast bowl above the Upper Neuadd reservoir, showers begin to fall as the clouds are forced up and over the west ridge. Pen Y Fan, Corn Du and Cribyn tower imposingly over the north end of the bowl, disappearing intermittently behind the consistent showers.
Strong winds and rain continue to push through as we ascend through the middle of the valley. As we reach our take off point, a glimmer of light reveals itself from behind the showers, being driven northwards by the prevailing wind. A short wait and the sun begins to perforate the clouds. Suddenly we are met with a glowing hue of gold across the expanse of the grassy slopes. The dark clouded hills lie in contrast behind. As the sun begins to shine, the winds drop, and it’s time to fly.
Being in it to win it has been a common theme across the UK this year. The plague of consistent bad weather has meant we have had to realign our thinking. For a small community of us here in the Brecon Beacons its meant a summer largely dominated by hike and fly, making every narrow window count.
